Utrecht soap that is good for everyone
Werfzeep is an artisanal organic soap factory in the heart of Utrecht, which has been making a permanently sustainable product from (literally) Utrecht soil since 2009. Located in the Druk building; a creative stronghold on the Westerkade in Utrecht. Both from a practical point of view and thanks to the creative activity, Druk is an important base for Werfzeep. The soaps are produced by a close-knit, critical, free-thinking and creative team that shares the same vision: soap should be good for your skin, nature and for the producers who grow the ingredients worldwide.
Rinske, communications coordinator, talks about the Werfzeepgeest: 'It is a product that is made on a human scale and without any compromise to people and the environment. Without plastic, but with a fair trade production chain, organic quality marks and the best ingredients and extracts.' They use local plants for their soaps, among other things. They pick and harvest a lot in the Wickenburg forest, the original base for Werfzeep. At the end of last year, a soap was made in collaboration with the Centraal Museum. And where do you start? 'First you look; what is the character of the organization? That's how we ended up with the monastery garden next to the museum and the story of the Agnieten, the nuns who originally maintained a monastery garden on the spot where the museum is now located.' There is now a soap on the market called 'Agnietenzeep'; soap with lady's mantle, violets and hawthorn blossom, inspired by and a tribute to the monastery garden of the Centraal Museum.
The power of a good, caring soap lies in the basis: the plant. In addition to local plants from the Wickenburg forest, Werfzeep also works with the Utrecht Botanical Gardens. Here they harvest pruning waste every year, for example from papyrus and laurel. They got the inspiration for their seasonal soaps from Wickenburg, which is close to Utrecht.
